Peninsula Homeless Initiative.Six or sixty? More, less? The number of homeless on the Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula is really not a static number, nor is it a program. Our homeless are comprised of men, women and children of all ages and their numbers change daily. Some are suffering because of the downturn in the economy, many have lost jobs through no fault of their own, and others may have had to deal with poor health and high medical bills. Some may be recovering from poor choices that lead to drug use or legal problems.
While the reasons for homelessness are many, the result is singular. The inability to meet one’s own basic needs or provide for a family causes a loss of personal dignity. And, that loss adversely affects our community. PENINSULA COMMUNITIES OF FAITH established the PENINSULA HOMELESS INITIATIVE, a duly registered DBA in the State of Washington, to assist families who may be at imminent risk of homelessness, as well as those who have already fallen into homelessness. This assistance may be immediate, such as providing food and temporary shelter or transportation; or sustaining, including services to rebuild and maintain stability and self-sufficiency, such as assistance obtaining counseling, education, job training, and employment. The PCoF is teaming with area churches and other organizations to provide these services. It is the goal of the PENINSULA HOMELESS INITIATIVE to enrich the lives of the homeless members of our community by providing shelter, transportation, job search services, nutritional and other basic needs. We pledge to create a profound impact on our community by providing compassionate humanitarian services to those in desperate need directly or through other service and faith based organizations. Presently, PENINSULA COMMUNITIES OF FAITH is pursuing funding to study/document the need of a homeless program in the Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula area. If you are willing to provide matching funds for grants or to help with fund raising please contact MaryWilliams, 253-509-0524 for further information. Help Needed!
